In the Summer of 2018 DC launched a new line of giant comics distributed exclusively through Walmart retailers. Each giant was priced at $4.99 and contained 100 pages. The content of each giant consisted of original stories and reprints. The reprints composed about three quarters of each issue.

The program began in July with four initial titles which were published monthly: Batman, Superman, Justice League and Teen Titans. Two special holiday one-shot issues were also published: Swamp Thing Halloween and Super Hero Holiday specials. In February 2019 the line-up was expanded to six titles. Two of the original titles were replaced with new ones; Wonder Woman took the place of Justice League; Titans replaced Teen Titans; Superman and Batman continued; The two new titles featured Flash and Swamp Thing.

Much of the original content, which comprised about one quarter of each giant, was later published in other formats for the Direct Market and digital release. However, a few stories from the Walmart exclusives have yet to be made available elsewhere.

In the Summer of 2019 changes were made to the program. The giants were released at other Mass Market retailers in addition to Walmart. Direct Market editions were also published with different cover artwork. The Direct Martket editions were released a few weeks after their Mass Market counterparts. All numbering was restarted with new #1 issues.

The last regular titles from the original program appeared in August 2019 with two exceptions: Superman Giant #15 and Superman Giant #16 which followed over the next two months. The first giant from the second phase was a one-shot giant starring Scooby-Doo released in September. This second phase featured several new and returning regular titles. Several one-shots, including those exploring genres beyond super-heroes, were also published.

In the Spring of 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a temporary shut down of comic book distribution in the Direct Market. This shutdown, initiated in April 2020, resulted in several scheduling changes and cancellations which affected the giants. Ultimately, the program was ended. The last Direct Market release was Aquaman Giant #4 in June 2020. Five giants which had been scheduled for publication in the Direct Market never made it, but Mass Market editions of those issues did arrive for sale at retailers.
