History:
Mark Shaw was a public defender who was frustrated in his attempts to gain justice for the poor and weak. His uncle Desmond told him about the Manhunters, who he claimed were members of a centuries-old organization of incorruptible crimefighters. (In fact, Desmond was himself a Manhunter agent.) Intrigued, Mark contacted the Grandmaster, head of Earth's Manhunters.

The next night Earth's Manhunter toook Mark Shaw to the Manhunters' base in the Himalayas. There, Shaw was given intensive training in combat and a Manhunter costume. As time passed, Shaw's costume came to affect his mind whenever he wore it so that he would obey his superiors in all matters.

Eventually exposed to the Manhunters' evil plans, Shaw broke free of their control with the help of the Justice League of America.

As a swashbuckling adventurer called the Privateer, Shaw became an ally of the JLA. But Shaw had been conditioned by the Manhunters to have a lust for power and, as the Star-Tsar, launched a major extortion scheme against the U.S. government. The Red Tornado exposed the Privateer as the Star-Tsar, and the Justice League sent Shaw to prison.

With the help of Belle Reve prison psychologist Simon LaGrieve, Shaw finally broke free of the Manhunters' mental conditioning. Shaw was released after he aided the Suicide Squad. Under the name Manhunter, Shaw now operates as a bounty hunter of costumed criminals.

Powers:
Manhunter carries a power baton that fires powerful energy blasts. He can add modular attachments to it that enable it to perform other functions. For example, the baton can be used as a nunchaka and can project a magnetic pulse that helps him in leaping between rooftops.

Manhunter is a highly formidable hand-to-hand combatant.
