History:
As a kid, Amos Fortune was leader of a gang made up of three other boys and a girl. They called him "Pudge" – but they knew his brilliance could keep them from being caught by the police.

Perhaps because of his name, Fortune had a lifelong fascination with the concept of luck, and so became a professional gambler. But he also earned degrees in science and through this made some remarkable discoveries.

The first was the existence of two tiny glands in the human body, one controlling good luck, the other controlling bad luck. He then invented the stimoluck, which could affect these glands, causing himself – or anyone else – to have the kind of luck he willed.

Fortune tested the stimoluck on the Justice League, and it seemed to work on them all. Then he captured six of them and shackled them to his Wheel of Misfortune. It included a version of the stimoluck which could overload the good-luck glands till they atrophied; thus the heroes could have nothing but bad luck.

He overlooked one thing: J'onn J'onzz, being a Martian, had no luck glands and so was able to thwart Fortune.

While in prison Fortune invented the dememorizer, which could wipe out a person's memory of his or her identity, and at the same time erase the memories of everyone else concerning the affected person. With this he escaped and once more tackled the JLA. He came close to destroying them, but was beaten by the Atom.

Amos Fortune returned to his study of luck, and discovered that some force from the stars influences cards, which is why they are used in fortune-telling. He then created a machine to focus this force on cards to such a degree that they could be used to make people act as he wished through auto-suggestion.

Then he gathered his former kid gang members to form the Royal Flush Gang. Although the makeup of the gang has varied since, and sometimes acted without Fortune, it was he who organized it.

On a later occasion he used a new Wheel of Misfortune to create the Luck League: seven people, each born on the seventh day of the seventh month, each having had only good luck. And now each had the power to give abilities similar to those of a JLA member to anyone he or she chose – through a good luck charm. The LL was short-lived, as Wonder Woman, whom he had used as part of his wheel device, turned the tables on him.

Fortune's next invention was the fortutron, which infected wealthy men with gambling fever so intense that they took incredible risks and lost everything – to Fortune. His mistake came in using it on Bruce Wayne, who captured him as the Batman.

Powers:
Aside from the luck he has temporarily instilled in himself as times, Fortune has no powers, but he does have great inventive genius, as well as a knowledge of luck and gambling unmatched elsewhere. It is this which enables him to go up against the greatest super-heroes. Being rather corpulent, he is hardly a great athlete – though he can move quite fast for a fat man.
