All-Star Squadron
All-Star Squadron

Name: All-Star Squadron
Universe: Post-Crisis
First Appearance: All-Star Squadron #60

History:
With the Japanese sneak attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and the resulting entry of the United States into World War II, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt requested that America's "mystery-men" (the costumed adventurers who would in later years be known as "super-heroes") band together in one organization to help oppose the Axis powers (Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and imperial Japan). Virtually all of America's "mystery-men" joined the wartime organization, which became known as the All-Star Squadron.

Among the members of the All-Star Squadron were all of the heroes who had served in or were then serving in the Justice Society of America, which was rechristened the Justice Battalion during the war. All of the members of the Law's Legionnaires also served in the All-Star Squadron, as did many mystery-men who otherwise operated outside such large teams.

Many of the mystery-men known as the Freedom Fighter also joined the All-Star Squadron. However, at presidential request, Uncle Sam and other heroes eventually left the Squadron to wrok as an entirely separate organization.

The original Hawkman chaired the first formal meeting of the All-Star Squadron. Liberty Belle was later elected permanent chairwoman of the organization, and still later, Hawkman and Liberty Belle served together as its co-chairmen.

In April 1942 a number of new, young heroes joined the All-Star Squadron: the original Fury, Flying Fox, "Iron" Munro, Neptune Perkins, the Tigress, and Tsunami. Together with Dyna-Mite, who was already a member, these new heroes became known unofficially as the "Young All-Stars".

The All-Star Squadron made their headquarters in the Perisphere, a building constructed in New York City for its 1939-1940 World's Fair.

The All-Star Squadron answered solely to the President of the United States and to the War Department. Upon the end of World War II, the All-Star Squadron disbanded, having completed a glorious history of victories over Axis agents and other menaces.
