Justice League
Justice League

Name: Justice League
Universe: Post-Crisis
First Appearance: Legends #1

History:
When the ruler of the planet Appellax perished years ago, a competition was declared to determine his successor. The claimants to the throne were sent to Earth, one each representing the dominant life-forms of Appellax.

Each of the life-forms "recruited" armies from the inhabitants of Earth, transforming people and animals into duplicates of their own form – stone, glass, bird-creatures, fire, wood, and crystal.

Working together, the most prominent heroes of Earth defeated the menace from the stars. At the conclusion of this adventure, Batman and the Flash suggested they join forces as a permanent team to combat evil and uphold justice. This team, which included Green Lantern, J'onn J'onzz, and Aquaman, became the Justice League of America.

In the ensuing period, Green Arrow, the Atom, Hawkman, Black Canary, Elongated Man, Zatanna, Red Tornado, Hawkwoman, and Firestorm joined the team. In addition, a teenager from Happy Harbor, "Snapper" Carr acted as the team "mascot" until he was tricked into betraying them by the Joker.

Over time, others were invited to join the League but rejected full-time membership. Honorary status was granted to Adam Strange, Metamorpho and Sargon the Sorcerer.

Participation in League emergencies varied over the years as individual heroes were called away by crises of more personal natures. At one low point in the group effort, Aquaman, the only active founding member, enacted a clause in the bylaws and disbanded the League. He then reformed the team, taking only those heroes who would make a full-time commitment. J'onn J'onzz, Elongated Man and Zatanna were the only ones to agree to this stipulation, but the team was soon fleshed out by Steel, Vixen, Vibe, and Gypsy. The new League established it headquarters in Detroit and later moved to New York, with its members setting up headquarters in the original JLA base – inside a mountain near Metropolis. Batman returned to the team to train the younger heroes.

During the anti-hero riots fomented by G. Gordon Godfrey the League was disbanded by J'onn J'onzz. Android killers sent by Professor Ivo tracked down the heroes, killing some and driving others from super-heroics, seemingly forever.

It was during this same crisis that Doctor Fate called upon a new team of heroes to become the Justice League. Batman, J'onn J'onzz, and Black Canary returned, now joined by Blue Beetle, Mr. Miracle, Guy Gardner, Captain Marvel, Dr. Light and Fate himself. Soon after, Rocket Red, Booster Gold, the Creeper and Captain Atom joined the team and the League took on an international scope.

A mysterious agent, Max Lord, has helped guide the JL and even helped grant them international diplomatic status. The League finally boasts the powers and abilities to protect the world from every and any danger.
