History:
The Martian Manhunter is a member of an ancient non-humanoid race that evolved ages ago on the planet Mars. The Martians were a race of poets, mystics, and visionaries among whom violence was a rare occurrence. The Martian Manhunter lived amidst this idyllic civilization many centuries ago. He was married and had at least one child, a daughter.

Then came a great plague that killed both the Manhunter's wife and daughter, and eventually wiped out the entire Martian race. The Manhunter was traumatized by the sight of his wife's corpse being consumed by the Fires of Purification.

The Martian Manhunter would have died with the rest of his race, had it not been for the intervention of Dr. Saul Erdel, an Earthman. For thirty years Erdel labored to create a means of teleportation whereby he could bring extraterrestrial forms of life to Earth. When Erdel first used his teleportation machine, it reached out through space and time and brought the Martian Manhunter, holding the body of his dead daughter, into his laboratory.

The Martian was semi-conscious, feverish, and in a state of shock. Erdel nursed him back to health over the course of three week. During this time, the Manhunter's mind telepathically filled Erdel's with images, forming a psychic bond between them; thus Erdel learned all about the Manhunter and his past.

After the Manhunter regained consciousness, Erdel offered to teleport him back to Mars. Flying into a rage, the Manhunter wrecked Erdel's machine. Unable to accept the horror he had experienced on Mars, the traumatized Manhunter withdrew into his own mind. In an effort to help him deal with his trauma, Erdel used their psychic link to create a new set of memories for the Manhunter, based on the science-fiction stories of his youth. It was these heroic fantasies that gave the Manhunter his desire to become a "super-hero" on Earth. Erdel could not persuade the Manhunter to adopt a human form, but did suggest the more humanoid appearance that the Manhunter did adopt. It was Erdel who gave the Manhunter his new "Martian" name of J'onn J'onzz to replace his real one, unpronounceable by Earth people.

After leaving Erdel, J'onn J'onzz knew that humanity would panic if they discovered the presence of a Martian among them. He began studying TV as a means of learning about Earth. He became fascinated by TV police dramas and decided to become a policeman himself. Assuming human form as "John Jones", the Manhunter applied for a position in Denver as a police detective, using his telepathic powers to cause policemen at the station to believe that they already knew him.

The Martian Manhunter was a founding member of the original Justice League of America and has served with the organization off and on throughout its history.

Recently, J'onn J'onzz has learned his true origins and his true appearance through confrontations with H'ronmeer, the Martian god of death and fire, and through a reunion with Dr. Erdel.

Powers:
The Martian Manhunter possesses numerous superhuman powers, including vast strength, the power to fly through telekinesis, the ability to move and react at super-speed, and remarkably fast reflexes.

The Martian Manhunter can alter his shape, appearance, and clothing at will to resemble both humanoid and non-humanoid creatures. He can also render himself invisible for brief periods fo time.

The Martian Manhunter has limited telepathic abilities, enabling him to read minds. He also possesses "Martian vision", which enables him to see through objects.

In the past, the Manhunter had a psychologically based vulnerability to the presence of fire, due to his buried traumatic memories of the burning of his wife's corpse. Exposure to fire once caused the Martian Manhunter to weaken greatly. Now that he knows the reason for his vulnerability to fire, the Manhunter no longer suffers from it and is virtually invulnerable.
