History:
Katar Hol was born on Thanagar, a planet orbiting the star Polaris, which had a scientifically advanced civilization in which crime was virtually unknown. His father, Paran Katar, devised artificial wings and anti-gravity belts which aided them in their studies of birds.

When Katar Hol was 18 Earth years old, the Manhawks began committing thefts on Thanagar. Wearing a protective hawk mask, his wings, and his anti-gravity belt, Katar Hol flew into battle with the Manhawks. He used a weapon his father had designed to render their own weapons useless, and he and other winged Thangarians soon captured the Manhawks.

Then Thangarians themselves began to steal, so a planetwide police force was formed. In honor of Paran Katar, each police officer wore a hawk mask, artificial wings, and an anti-gravity belt. Katar Hol became the most decorated officer in the police force and married policewoman Shayera Thal.

Katar and Shayera journeyed to Earth in pursuit of the criminal Byth. They were befriended by Midway City police commissioner George Emmett, who established cover identities for them on Earth as Carter and Shiera Hall. Katar and Shayera remained on Earth, studying its crimefighting methods and battling evil as the super-heroes Hawkman and Hawkwoman. Both joined the Justice League of America.

Hawkman played the major role in freeing Thanagar from the warlike dictatorship of the alien Hyathis. But Thanagar has established a new military dictatorship bent on conquering other planets. Hawkman and Hawkwoman thwarted Thangarian plans to invade Earth, destroying their own starship in the process. Hawkman and Hawkwoman remain on Earth, regarded as traitors by Thanagar.

Powers:
Hawkman can fly at great speed by means of his artificial wings and anti-gravity belt. The anti-gravity belt also enables him to lift enormous weights aloft.

Hawkman utilizes various Thanagarian weapons and has a considerable knowledge of his homeworld’s advanced science. He prefers to use duplicates of ancient Earth weapons in battle, which he creates with a Thanagarian duplicator machine.

On coming to Earth in pursuit of Byth, Hawkman learned all Earth knowledge using a device called an absorbascon. With effort he can retrieve any of it from his subconscious. The device also taught him how to communicate with Earth’s birds.

Hawkman is a superb hand-to-hand combatant. His body has been treated to withstand extreme temperatures and air friction. He can survive unharmed in a vacuum for five minutes.
