Synopsis:
Professor Emil Hamilton has invented a magnetic force field device that he believes can act as a nationwide defense system. However, Lex Luthor claims that he owns the device because Hamilton used his computers while employed at a Lexcorp subsidiary. When Hamilton refuses to surrender the device, Luthor tries to intimidate Hamilton by having him attacked.

Hamilton still refuses to give in to Luthor's demands, and the Department of Defense refuses to give him a chance. Another company, Compucon Services expresses interest, so Hamilton demonstrates his device for them. However, the machine is sabotaged and a Compucon executive is killed. Hamilton is blamed. Unknown to the professor Compucon was another subsidiary of Lexcorp.

When Superman is battling the robotic vehicles of the terrorist Freedom League, Hamilton sees an opportunity to demonstrate the power of his machine. He uses in to encase Superman and the terrorist machine inside a force field. The field begins sapping Superman's strength, but he prevails anyway. Following the battle, Hamilton and his contribution are ignored.

Hamilton snaps and decides to use the machine against Superman in an effort to prove its effectiveness. He takes a hostage, then forces Superman to walk through a gauntlet while the force field surrounds the area. The Man of Steel overcomes Hamilton's attacks and the professor is taken into police custody.
