Chapter 8

This story takes place across two time periods. The first is continued directly from Atlantis Chronicles #5 and details the war between Atlantis and the people of ancient Egypt. It continues directly in Atlantis Chronicles #7. The second time period which serves to frame the war story takes place thousands of years later. It involves a great priest who relates the story of the war to Solon from Athens.

The exact time of the war with Egypt is questionable. The great priest claims that the story took place 8000 years earlier. He appears to be from the Golden Age of Athens (approximately 440 B.C.). However, Ramses III is depicted as the ruler of Egypt. Ramses III ruled during the 12th Century B.C., so perhaps the priest meant 800 years earlier rather than 8000. This is especially telling since the first civilizations of man did not exist until 4000 B.C. Therefore, this story shall be assumed to take place in around 1180 B.C., which is a few years into the reign of Ramses III.

A fictitious prose article entitled "An Interview with Professor R.K. Simpson" follows this story.

Synopsis:
A man from Athens seeks wisdom from a great priest. The priest shares a story involving an attempt by the people of Atlantis to conquer the surface world.

Shortly after Atlan returned to Atlantis with proof the life on the surface still existed, King Honsu, counseled by his queen Lorelei, leads an invasion of the surface world. A group of Atlanteans known as the Idylists oppose the world. Led by Shayera, this group leaves Atlantis and founds their own civilization far from Atlantis. Atlan gives Shayera a warning to beware those babes with purple eyes.

Honsu's youngest son Haumond also opposes the war, but he joins the effort as a soldier. Atlan leads the conquering force to the surface where it quickly establishes a technological superiority over existing civilizations. The conquest continues until they reach Egypt, ruled by Ramses III. Egypt's forces pose a significant threat to the Atlanteans as does the desert heat. During a large battle, the Atlanteans are driven back, many are killed, and Haumond is captured. The defeat does not deter Honsu, who plans to continue his conquests, while avoiding Egypt.

Meanwhile, Haumond is brought before Ramses. He offers his life in exchange for those of his men. The men eagerly want Haumond to die. Ramses spares Haumond and kills the men for their disloyalty. Haumond is then take to the god No-Amun, who Haumond discovers is descended from Atlantis. No-Amun explains that his ancestors were part of an exploration party sent by Orin. Their submarines were permanently damaged by radiation from the meteorite which caused Atlantis to sink. Stranded on the surface, they eventually helped mankind, sometimes overtly, sometimes covertly. When they tried to return to Atlantis, they discovered the Atlanteans had changed, so they remained on the surface. No-Amun demands an explanation for the attack. Haumond, who always opposed the war, vows to put a stop to the conquest.
