Rodeo star Hank Wheeler tells a group of children the story of Wild Bill Hickok's death. He explains that Wild Bill was holding a poker hand of "Aces and Eights" which would become known as the "Dead Man's Hand."

Wheeler then receives his own "Dead Man's Hand," as Aces and Eights begin showing up in his life. When the final eight shows up during a rodeo ride, he is thrown from the bull.

After the match, Hank meets the Phantom Stranger. He then joins a poker game with other rodeo riders. The Phantom Stranger deals each a "Dead Man's Hand," causing Jim Pomeroy to reveal himself as the man behind Wheeler's strange hand. Pomeroy intended to scare Wheeler and become the rodeo champion.
