Synopsis:
Born to a tribe of Navajo Indians, Johnny Cloud was named Flying Cloud by his father. Throughout his life Johnny has seen a cloud resembling a rider on horseback that formed the basis for his name. During his childhood, Johnny was victimized by prejudice because of his Indian background. He joined the military and became an established pilot, but still was the target of racial slurs.

On his first regular assignment, Johnny joins a squadron of fighters. His squadron nicknames him the Flying Chief and designates the squadron's name as the War Party. Johnny proves an excellent pilot and fighter. During an early mission, Johnny shoots down most of the enemy bombers single-handedly. However, a German fighter nearly takes him out of the sky. Mack, Johnny's squad leader comes to the rescue, but is shot down and fatally wounded. Honoring the dying wish of Mack, Johnny is named flight leader, and the squadron is renamed the Happy Braves.
