Synopsis:
While Perry White takes a vacation, his position at the Daily Planet is filled by George Earns. The new editor wants sensational stories to boost circulation. When an unbelievable tip is called in, Earns orders the story printed without checking the facts. Superman determines that the story was false, but he uses his powers to make the hoax a reality.

Superman then learns that crooks are behind the impossible headlines. Superman is forced to make a second headline come true to save the Planet's reputation. Then the crooks plant a phony diary revealing that Clark is Superman. Lois finds it, and Earns prints the story.

Superman chooses not to refute the story. When gangsters lead by Jigger Benson try to gun down Clark, they are surprised to find the newspaper story is true. Superman apprehends Benson, then explains that the crook was behind the phony headlines. He wanted to discredit the Planet so that no one would believe it when they exposed his criminal operations. Superman also claims to have been impersonating Clark in order to ensnare Benson. Thus he protects his secret identity.
