Lois Lane plays a practical joke on Clark Kent by creating a dummy newspaper which exposes his secret identity. However, the pressroom prints the story and news of Clark's secret becomes public knowledge. Perry White learns about the joke and intends to fire Lois and the head pressman. Clark saves their jobs by suggesting that they play the mistake as a hoax.

Clark dresses as Superman and plays the part. However, crime boss Iron Ike learns about the hoax and intends to kill Kent by impersonating Perry White. Ike makes Clark jump out a window and land on the pavement. When he survives the fall, he claims that he knew about Iron Ike's plot and is the real Superman. After the threat has passed, the Daily Planet reveals the hoax to the public. Lois never suspects that her joke headline was really the truth.
