Comments:
This is the first appearance of the Earth-1 Wildcat. The original Wildcat existed on Earth-2 and was a semi-regular member of the Justice Society. This story clearly takes place on Earth-1 since Batman's costume possesses the yellow oval on his chest symbol. Therefore unless Wildcat was moving between Earths on a regular basis, this must be his Earth-1 counterpart. There is further evidence of this in the story which suggests that Ted Grant is well-known as a former heavyweight champ.
Synopsis:
Bruce Wayne locates and approaches former heavyweight champ Ted Grant to coach a boxing team for the World Youth Games. Ted is down on his luck and has lost his confidence. Only when it appears Bruce is being mugged, does Ted agree to be a coach.
Bruce and Ted fly to Vienna where the games are too be held. Ted is reintroduced to Koslov, a former contender to whom Ted never gave a title shot. Koslov mocks Ted, who eventually agrees to a match.
Meanwhile, Batman makes contact with military intelligence who ask him to find a freelance spy who is planning to sell the plans to a space station. Agents from a foreign power capture Batman.
While fighting, Koslov tells Ted to take a dive or his countrymen will kill Batman. When the stadium suffers a power outage, Ted grabs Koslov and forces him to lead the way to Batman. He rescues the Caped Crusader, then returns to the ring. Ted finishes the match with a win, and Batman retrieves the plans from the spy.
