Synopsis:
Batman is nearly killed while protecting crime boss Big John Jarrett from a mob hit. After recovering from his injuries, Batman meets Adam Strange. Adam explains that he was briefly sent to the future by the zeta-beam. While there, he saw a newspaper with Batman's obituary. He grabbed a scrap of the paper before being sent back to his own time. He gives the scrap to Batman.
Batman reads in the article that he betrayed his friends and tarnished his reputation before his death. The Caped Crusader wonders why he would do these things. Next he meets Mike Morrison, a leading citizen who has run into trouble with the syndicate. Batman offers to help by paying a visit to the syndicate lawyer Brian T. Fassett.
The mob lawyer offers Batman a deal. If Batman backs off from the syndicate for one week and convinces Commissioner Gordon to do likewise, the syndicate will stop their takeover of Morrison's business. Batman reluctantly agrees.
Batman then discovers that Morrison has been arrested. Fassett came forward about his deal with Batman which causes a scandal. Batman then assaults Fassett, leading to a lawsuit. Batman is disgraced, and Gordon goes down with him. Angry, Batman returns home and gets in to an argument with Alfred which leads to his butler's dismissal. Batman realizes that the article Adam Strange gave him is coming true and that his death is imminent.
Batman contacts Adam Strange, and they take a trip to Rann. Batman plans to stay there in order to avoid his own death. Sardath creates a device which can be used to view events on Earth. Batman watches Alfred with the device as he meets with Jarrett. Alfred has gambling debts which Jarrett uses to blackmail him. Alfred refuses to betray Bruce or Batman as the crooks want, despite his dismissal.
In order to help Alfred, Batman returns to Earth. Adam Strange joins him. The two rescue Alfred and apprehend Jarrett and Fassett. Their efforts also provide evidence to expose the syndicate. Batman realizes that the article must have been wrong or from farther in the future, as he survives his supposed death.
