Synopsis:
A new man, Hector Hammond, has taken the Coast City social scene by storm. Not only does Hammond possess good social graces, he also controls many technological marvels such as a floating mansion. Impressed by his claims of Hammond’s brilliance, Carol Ferris finds herself drawn to him.

At the Ferris Aircarft Company, Hal Jordan expresses distrust of Hammond to his mechanic, Pieface. It seems that each of the sciences that Hammond specializes in, have experienced disappearances by leading members. Hal decides to investigate as Green Lantern. He enlists Pieface to distract Hammond by pretending to be GL while the real Green Lantern is investigating. He rings up a power ring for Pieface, and uses the ring to disguise his friend.

Pieface flys over Coast City and is watched by Hammond, as well as the four missing scientists. They have been transformed into futuristic beings. The scientists use a sigma-ray to draw the decoy Green Lantern to them, accidently pulling the ring off his finger. They manage to slow his landing, but his ring lands elsewhere.

Elsewhere, Hammond finds the ring and tries it out. He also thinks back to when he discovered a meteorite made of dark iron which evolved the plant life near it. When he discovered it’s strange properties he brought the four scientists to it and evolved them. Then he imprisoned them and forced the men to work for him.

Hammond returns to the compound where the scientists are held and discovers Pieface, who is still disguised as Green Lantern. He uses the power ring to devolve Pieface into an ape. The real Green Lantern has located some mysterious vibrations with his ring and tracks them to Hammond’s location. They duel briefly, but Hammond flys off before he can be captured.

Hammond tries to delay his pursuit by bursting the Coast City dam. Green Lantern diverts the raging waters and continues pursuit. Hammond has had time to lay a trap though. GL almost falls into it, but Hammond’s ring has run out of charge. He is knocked out by GL, who then frees Pieface and returns the scientists to normal.

With Hammond exposed as a fraud, things return to normal. Carol is once again fixated on Green Lantern, and Hammond is placed in prison where he schemes to create another plan.
