A heat wave caused by sunspot activity grips Metropolis. Superman notices that a blind beggar is not sweating in the intense heat. After refilling a dried up lake, Superman confronts the beggar who is revealed as Vor-Kil, a Phantom Zone criminal. Vor-Kil has escaped the Zone through a space rift also caused by the sunspots. Superman and Vor-Kil battle in the sky above Metropolis until the Man of Steel leads his opponent into a trap. Jimmy Olsen is waiting nearby with a Phantom Zone projector and sends the criminal back to where he came.
