Dick Grayson's classmate Mary Wills is infatuated with Robin. She studies and trains in order to become his partner in crime fighting. When she first arrives on the scene as Roberta the Girl Wonder, Robin tries to dissuade her from her goal. Mary persists and stows away in the Batmobile trunk which brings her to the Bat-Cave. Robin is upset, but he thinks of a way for her to be of use.

Robin sends Roberta undercover to spot a wanted criminal. When Mary succeeds, Robin and Roberta begin working together more often. However, Robin is able to uncover her secret identity. Fearing that crooks could do the same, Robin schemes to cause Mary's mask to come off in public. With her identity publicly revealed, Mary agrees to retire as a crime fighter.
