Comments:
This story takes place shortly after Robin's first appearance in the first story of Detective Comics #38. Robin's origin is retold.

This story inaccurately shows Batman working with the police during a time when he was still considered an illegal vigilante.

Synopsis:
After Batman helps Dick Grayson earn his vengeance by captured the killers responsible for the death of the Flying Graysons, Batman plans to send Dick back to the circus. Dick pleads to continue on as Robin. Batman gives him a chance to prove himself.

Robin's chance comes when Stick-Up Sidney and his gang begin a crime spree. Batman and Robin track down the gang, but Robin is taken hostage. Batman is forced to surrender the fight. Robin is released when the police close in, but Batman remains the prisoner of the gang.

On his own, Robin examines clues at the crime scene to track down the gang. When he finds their hide-out, he uses a distraction which allows him the opportunity to release Batman. Together Batman and Robin apprehend the gang. Robin believes he has failed because he made a mistake, but Batman commends him for rectifying the error. Robin is then rewarded by becoming Batman's permanent partner.
