Artist Carl Marlin paints the portrait of Frank Fabian. Fabian then kills Marlin. Marlin's wife accuses Fabian, but there is not enough evidence to arrest him. Fabian then takes the portrait home.

Fabian then disguised as the Dapper Bandit begins adding robbery to his list of crimes. However, he is horrified to discover that for each evil act he commits the face on the portrait grows more grotesque. Fabian tries to sell the painting, then tries to destroy it.

Batman discovers that Marlin's wife has been altering the painting each day. He then has her restore the painting which she has saved from destruction. Batman then uses make-up on the unconscious Fabian to make him look like a monster. When he sees himself in the mirror, he believes he has been cursed and admits his crimes. Batman captures him then shows Fabian that he was tricked.
