Synopsis:
Valda awakens as a captive of the hun priest Chelchak. It was he who stopped the man-eating horses from killing her. However, she has killed the hun leader's prize mare and is now scheduled to be sacrificed. Chelchak takes her before the hun kagan and spills her blood on a hide decorated by horse drawings. The priest asks the kagan to spare Valda's life. When the hun orders her dead anyway, Chelchak transforms into a horse and carries Valda to freedom.

Valda and Chelchak part ways at the river. Valda crosses and is reunited with Malagigi who shows her that all the horses of the frank army have mysteriously died. Valda realizes that it was Chelchak's spell which killed them. Without the horses, Carlous Magnus cannot continue the war against the huns.
