This story continues in part in Weird Western Tales #24.

This story takes place during President Grant's tour of the West. No date is mentioned, but in the real world the tour took place in April, 1873.

Synopsis:
Jonah Hex kills one of the Lando brothers and captures the other. He brings them to the town of Point Pyrrhus to collect the bounty. While Hex waits for his money to arrive from the capital, he is approached by Secret Service agent Michael Fenton. President Grant is touring the West by train and will be stopping in Point Pyrrhus. Fenton hires Hex to assist him in protecting the President.

Fenton and Hex track down a gang of men who want to assassinate Grant for his southern-friendly policies. When they are captured by the gang, Fenton gives his life to allow Hex to escape. Jonah then goes after the rest of the gang who are set to ambush the President's train.

The sheriff of Point Pyrrhus has been hired by an old enemy of Jonah's to kill him. He ambushes Hex while Jonah is trying to stop the assassins. The sheriff is killed, and Jonah manages to detonate a stick of dynamite to take out the assassins. However, he is caught in the blast.

Grant's train passes the town without stopping. The President has been called back to Washington on urgent business. Aboard the train is Hex's enemy, who sees Jonah's body lying in the street seemingly dead. Jonah clings to life, but the town doctor believes the prognosis for his survival is grim.
