Synopsis:
Superman's help is requested by President Reagan to investigate the disappearance of all residents in Trudeau, South Dakota. Superman finds the town empty of residents nor does he encounter the previous search teams. However, he is haunted by a ghostly presence which begins attacking him. Superman allows himself to be captured and taken deep underground to find the source of the mystery.
He then meets Hfuhruhurr, the Wordbringer an alien who has come to Earth to spread enlightenment by ridding people of their bodies. Using the brains of the kidnapped townspeople in a machine the Wordbringer gains psychic powers to battle Superman. The Man of Steel is then forced to fight a monster while his opponent flees.
After the fight, the stolen brains communicate with Superman telepathically. They want Superman to end their lives but he refuses to kill them. The brains then mentally take command over Superman's body and flip the switch which destroys them. The brains die, and Superman regains his senses.
