Synopsis:
Swamp Thing's consciousness awakens in the body of a dead soldier named Alexander Holland. Although confused, he is able to reanimate the boy's body making him seem to be alive. Holland is under the command of Sgt. Rock who nicknames him Lazarus after he apparently rises from the dead.
Swamp Thing eventually learns that the date May 1945. He has no recollection of how he traveled into the past. As these of the last days of World War II in Europe, Easy Company is being recalled from action. However, they receive an assignment to carry out one last mission. They are ordered to raid a farmhouse.
Rock and Swamp Thing, still in Holland's body, approach the house. Holland plans to release some animals as a diversion, but at the last minute the orders change. An air strike has now been ordered. Rock tries to retrieve Holland before the strike begins, only to find him dead.
Swamp Thing has left the body of Holland and creates a new body for himself. He has sensed the presence of Anton Arcane inside the house. Arcane is a Nazi General who claims to be responsible for Hitler's rise to power. He receives a mystical talisman known as the Claw of Aelkhund from a Nazi colonel who has been collecting supernatural items. When Swamp Thing attacks, Arcane uses the Claw to vanquish him. Arcane has no knowledge of who Swamp Thing is, but this encounter will drive his obsession in the future.
The air strike then destroys the farmhouse. A bull gores Arcane and carries him away. Despite this, the master of evil survives. The Unknown Soldier then takes possession of the other mystic artifacts.
