Eventually, Shade, who had been in the role of Kennedy, is able to break through the madness of Duane's delusion. Shade, Kathy, and Duane then return to present day Dallas.

When the giant Kennedy Sphinx manifestation swallows Kathy, Shade is forced to take the form of Trilby's dead daughter. As Mary-Ann, Shade leads Duane through a number of conspiracy theories. He eventually concludes that America killed JFK.

Upon their return, Kathy has freed herself from the Sphinx. Shade drops Mary-Ann's form, causing Duane to shot him. Duane then answers the riddle of the Sphinx causing it to disappear.
