History:
The 2000 Committee is a group dedicated to a takeover of the U.S. government by the year 2000. It was founded by various leaders in business and politics, not all of the same political leanings, but all strong in the belief that the government is run inefficiently and would be better if subsumed into an oligarchy which could act more swiftly and decisively in both national and international affairs.

Few of the leaders are known, but one was Clarissa Clemens, ex-wife of Prof. Martin Stein, while another was industrialist Henry Hewitt.

The group recruited Multiplex and kidnapped Lorraine Reilly to blackmail her father, a senator, into supporting a bill to give Hewitt a nuclear monopoly. They also sought to duplicate Firestorm's origin, resulting in the transformation of Lorraine into Firehawk and Hewitt into Tokamak.

The organization the hired Slipknot to kill Firestorm and recapture Lorraine. When he failed, they turned to the Assassination Bureau. Through its agents, the goal was nearly attained, but the Bureau proved not to be too fair to its own. As a result, on, incognito, left to strike out on his own – while another, Mindboggler, turned on Breathtaker and helped Firestorm to wreck the 2000 Committee.

Recent intelligence reports assembled by the government indicate the 2000 Committee has reorganized. Eschewing super-villain employees, they have rededicated their efforts to more covert political and monetary programs. Their goal has remained unchanged: the takeover of the American government by the turn of the century.
