History:
Hal Jordan, a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, had been checking over the company’s new flightless training module when he and the module were suddenly yanked skywardby a bolt of emerald energy. The green glow carried the module to the heart of the Sierra Madre mountain range, and deposited it in front of what appeared to be the wreckage of an alien spacecraft.

Cautiously, Jordan entered the ruined ship, to find a red-skinned alien clad in a green-and-black uniform lying on the floor. The alien’s name was Abin Sur, and he was dying.

Through telepathy, Abin Sur explained that he was a member of the intergalactic peace-keeping force knownas the Green Lantern Corps, and that it was his duty, as death approached, to pass on his power to someone who was utterly honest and born without fear. By the light of his power ring, he could see Hal Jordan was both. Quickly, Abin Sur explained the use of the power ring and its attendant power battery, then having placed the ring on Jordan’s finger, Abin Sur expired.

Following Abin Sur’s final instructions, Jordan donned Sur’s uniform, then used the power ring to bury Abin Sur and the remains of his spacecraft beneath one of the Sierra Madre mountains.

Returning to Ferris Aircraft, Hal Jordan began a lengthy career as the Emerald Crusader known as Green Lantern. He soon met the Guardians of the Universe, those immortal old men who had founded the Green Lantern Corps untold centuries before; and eventually rose to the forefront of the Corps.

As the years passed, Hal Jordan’s personal life had many ups and downs. For a time, he left Ferris Aircraft and pursued careers as an insurance investigator, a toy salesman, and an independent trucker. But, eventually, he returned to Ferris Aircraft and, more specifically, to Carol Ferris, owner of the company and the woman Jordan loved.

At last, after Jordan’s duties as Green Lantern kept him occupied elsewhere across the cosmos while Ferris Aircraft was almost destroyed by the super-villains known as the Demolition Team, Carol offered him a choice: either the Green Lantern Corps or her. She simply couldn’t stand the insecurity any longer. After a great deal of soul-searching, Jordan realized he was tired of his seemingly endless efforts as Green Lantern and chose to resign from the Corps to be with the woman he loved.

Though he is no longer Green Lantern, at this writing, Hal Jordan is still involved with the adventures and problems of John Stewart, his successor in the role of Earth’s Green Lantern.

Powers:
A skilled athlete and hand-to-hand combatant, Hal Jordan’s principal weapon is the power ring he wears on the middle finger of his right hand. After absorbing energy from the emerald power battery from which the Green Lanterns take their name, the ring is charged with power for a period of 24 hours and is capable of doing almost anything its wearer can think of and force into being through the power of his own will. Thus the power ring can enable its wearer to fly, to create giant objects formed of the ring’s emerald energy, and to survive the rigors of deep space, among other uses. During this 24-hour period, the power ring has only one weakness: due to a necessary impurity in the construction of the power battery itself, the ring is utterly ineffective against anything colored yellow. At the end of the 24 hours, the ring must be recharged at the battery to renew its power.
