History:
A wealthy collector of curios, Mortimer Drake was a man of exotic and idiosyncratic tastes. When he found himself unable to add certain prized items to his private museum through any legal means, Drake adopted the guise of a modern-day Musketeer and, calling himself the Cavalier, embarked upon a crime spree that ultimately brought him into conflict with Batman and Robin.
Several times over the next few months, the Cavalier matched wits with the Dynamic Duo, eluding capture each time, until the Batman finally deduced his true identity and captured him.
Though the Cavalier has escaped prison a number of times over the ensuing years and returned to his life of crime, he has always been recaptured by some member of the Batman family, and returned to a federal penitentiary to serve out the rest of his sentence.
Mortimer Drake has long since paid his debt to society and has retired to his country manor to live out the rest of his days in peace.
Powers:
Despite his foppish outward appearance, the Cavalier is one of the most dangerous foes Batman has ever faced. The feathered plume in his hat is actually a steel-tipped dart. His sword is electrified and is capable of firing devastating bolts of lightning. The colorful kerchief he wears stuffed into his gauntlet has heavy lead pellets sewn into the hem, and he carries a tin of a debilitating "snuff" that can be blown into an opponent's face.
Though an able athlete and skilled hand-to-hand combatant, the Cavalier is also a gallant and courtly villain who refuses to harm a woman and who has, in fact, on occasion, stopped in the midst of committing a crime to help an elderly woman with her packages.
