History:
In the days of ancient Egypt a woman named Shiera and her beloved, Prince Khufu, were captured by the high priest of the god Anubis, Hath-Set, who intended to conquer the world. Hath-Set murdered first Khufu and then Shiera.
Many centuries later, a young woman named Shiera Sanders had nightmares about the fate of the Egyptian Shiera. Sanders met Carter Hall, the reincarnation of Khufu, and she realized that she herself was the reincarnation of the Egyptian Shiera.
Hath-Set had also been reincarnated as the scientist Dr. Anton Hastor, who still planned to conquer the Earth. He captured Shiera and was about to sacrifice her to Anubis when she was rescued by Hall in his new guise of Hawkman. Hall and Sanders subsequently fell in love.
Sometime later, Hawkman brought Sanders a woman's version of his own costume with large artificial wings and a belt of "ninth metal" that would enable her to fly. They then went to a costume ball together as Hawkman and "Hawkwoman". Shortly thereafter, Sanders, in her new costume, tried to aid a couple who were being blackmailed. Sanders was captured by criminals, but was then rescued by Hawkman, who disapproved of her attempt to play super-hero.
Nevertheless, Sanders soon became the Hawkman's crimefighting partner, calling herself Hawkgirl. She also joined the wartime All-Star Squadron.
Hawkman and Hawkgirl both retired as super-heroes in 1951. Hall and Sanders were married, and they had a son, Hector, who later became the super-hero known as the Silver Scarab. As Hawkman and Hawkgirl they frequently visited Feithera, a hidden city of birdpeople in Greenland, where they became the godparents of Norda, now known as the super-hero Northwind, who is the son of a human and a Feitheran.
Shiera Hall never returned to the career of super-hero, although her husband, Carter, did. The Halls' identities as Hawkman and Hawkgirl are now publicly known.
Powers:
Hawkgirl could fly at great speed using her artifical wings and her anti-gravity belt made of "ninth metal". The anti-gravity belt also enabled her to life great weights aloft. She wielded ancient and medieval weapons from Carter Hall's collection in battle, and could communicate with birds.
Hawkgirl was a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, and although she is out of practice, she retains unusual physical vitality to this day, thanks to absorbing temporal energy decades ago from the villainous Ian Karkull.
