History:
It all began far away, on the planet Krypton, which revolved around a distant red sun. That world was ruled by its greatest scientists, who formed the Science Council. Among them was Jor-El, the most brilliant scientist of them all. He had discovered that Krypton had unstable elements in its core, which soon would cause the planet to explode.
But the other members of the Science Council did not believe him. They had banned space travel, so to save his family, Jor-El secretly designed a spaceship. The end came when he had only finished a small model, and into this Jor-El and his wife, Lara, placed their little son, Kal-El.
When the boy reached Earth, he was found and adopted by the Kents, Jonathan and Martha. His foster parents learned that little Clark, as they named him, had super-powers. Of course, they had to keep his powers a secret, but since they lived on a farm at the time, it wasn’t too hard. Even so, there were a few close calls, and the Kents had to think fast to account for things some people saw – things that might have given away the child’s powers.
By the time he was ready to start school, Clark had learned how to hide his strength from others. It was just about this time that the family sold the farm and moved into Smallville. They bought a general store, where they sold not only groceries, but just about anything you can name.
When Clark was eight years old, he was ready to begin his career as Superboy. Once he had his costume, there were other things to learn – including how to fly!
He had actually been flying since shortly after he reached Earth when the combination of our yellow sun and lighter gravity than that of Krypton gave him many powers. But he had never been able to direct his flight properly. He had to practice until he could control himself in flight.
Soon Superboy became the hero of Smallville, and, as time went by and his fame spread, of the world. Yet no one believed meek young Clark Kent could be the mighty Boy of Steel.
At first, everyone thought Superboy was immune to all harm. But one day, just where his rocket had landed, Jonathan Kent found a strange green, glowing rock, which he took home. Clark fell ill, and no one could understand what was wrong with him – until they discovered he always felt better when a lead robot he had built stood between him and the rock. Thus was Kryptonite discovered!
Superboy also learned he was not the only survivor of Krypton. The first such survivor he met was a dog, which turned out to be his own pet when he was a baby – Krypto! The pooch had been placed in an experimental rocket by Jor-El and sent into space, but a meteor had knocked it off its course and it landed upon Earth.
Superboy eventually, left Smallville when his foster parents died of a rare tropical disease. He moved to Metropolis and continued his career there as Superman!
