Name: Green Lantern Corps
Universe: Post-Crisis
First Appearance: Green Lantern Corps #207
History:
For countless aeons, the Green Lantern Corps had been a group of 3600 beings chosen by the Guardians of the Universe for their honesty and fearlessness – chosen to combat evil, each in an assigned sector of space. However, after the Guardians' retirement, the ancient traditions changed: the Guardians gave up their stewardship, leaving the Green Lanterns all their previous powers, but abolishing individual space sectors, letting each member of the Corps make his own decision as to how and where to combat evil. Hal Jordan and John Stewart were both advised by the Guardians to watch over their home planet, Earth, for mankind's development would play a crucial role in the universe over the next millennium. Five other members of the Corps decided to make Earth their home base: Arisia of Graxos IV, Katma Tui of Korugar, Ch'p of H'lven, Kilowog of Bolovax Vix and Salakk of Slyggia. Those seven in turn, were instrumental in the formation of the New Guardians.
Shortly thereafter, the machinations of Sinestro brought nearly all existing Green Lanterns to Oa to prevent the destruction of the central power battery that dispensed energy to their rings. To defeat Sinestro, Hal Jordan was forced to momentarily unleash the yellow impurity contained within the battery. While this action saved it, it destroyed nearly every existent power ring, leaving only four intact: Jordan's and the rings of those Green Lanterns not on Oa: Gnort's, Guy Gardner's, and Ch'p's. The rest, left powerless, returned to their homes, leaving the Corps, for all intents and purposes, permanently disbanded. It is known, however, that sometime in the future, the GL Corps will be back at full power and serve the universe by the late 30th century.
