Abigail Arcane Cable Holland, the woman who is the consort of the last of Earth's plant elementals and the mother of the first of a new line of human elementals, grew up an orphan In a small village in the Balkan mountains of Eastern Europe. Abby's father, businessman Grigori Arcane, was believed killed after he stepped on a hidden mine left over from World War II. Grigori actually survived the blast and was reconstructed by his brother Anton, a depraved scientist, into the grotesque, nearly mindless creature known as the Patchwork Man.
Abigail studied medicine and as an adult became her village's only medic. She first encountered Lt. Matthew Cable. an agent for United States Intelligence. when he came to her village in pursuit of the second Swamp Thing, whom he then incorrectly believed to be the killer of his associate Alec Holland. During Cable's visit, the Patchwork Man escaped from imprisonment at Anton's castle and abducted Abby, dimly realizing he had a connection to her. Soon afterwards, however, this creature aided Swamp Thing in saving Abby from falling into a chasm. Abby recognized the Patchwork Man as her father just before he fell to his death.
Assuming that both her uncle and father had died, Abby accompanied Cable when he left the village on his continuing hunt for the wandering Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing repeatedly saved their lives on subsequent occasions. leading Abby to realize that he was not a murderer after all. Eventually, the Swamp Thing revealed to them that he possessed the intelligence of Alec Holland. and Cable and Abby became Swamp Thing's sole human friends. Eventually Abby married Cable, but their marriage was severely strained as a result of Cable's alcoholism. Moving to Houma, Louisiana. near the swamp where the Swamp Thing lived, Abby took a job caring for autistic children. Eventually. Matt was nearly killed in an automobile accident engineered by Anton Arcane. Matt survived for years in a coma, kept alive solely by life-support devices.
Soon after being reunited, Abby and Swamp Thing fell in love with each other. and now regard themselves as husband and wife. She decided to call herself Abby Holland, taking the last name of the Swamp Thing's deceased human counterpart. But not long after their 'marriage," scandal broke out in Houma when Abby's sexual relationship with Swamp Thing was publicly revealed, with police charges being brought against her. Abby left the bayou for Gotham City, only to be apprehended for extradition to Louisiana. In retaliation, Swamp Thing wreaked havoc in Gotham: the city's costumed protector. Batman, intervened and succeeded in having the charges against Abby dropped.
Abby returned to Houma, where she again lived happily with the Swamp Thing At one point. when Swamp Thing's consciousness was forced off the Earth, Abby feared her husband was dead The Parliament of Trees, a community of formerly active plant elementals, also believed Swamp Thing dead and created his successor, a new plant elemental called the Sprout. When the Swamp Thing's consciousness returned to Earth, he and Abby managed to solve the problems inherent in the existence of two plant elementals by incarnating the Sprout into a wholly human form. Swamp Thing took possession of the body of John Constantine and used I to father Abby's daughter, whose body was inhabited by the Sprout's consciousness. The child, named Tefe. Is destined to be the first in a line of human elementals who will succeed the plant elementals such as the members of the Parliament.
Abby became the center of another Scandal when she was charged with murdering her husband Matt. after the life-support systems keeping him alive but comatose were shut off. The police were persuaded to drop the charges. Shortly afterwards, Abby went to work at the Spanish Acres Home for the Elderly.
Abby continues to live happily in the swamps of Houma with the Swamp Thing and with their daughter, Tefe.
