Comments:
As revealed in Adventures of Superman #440, the Superman robot in this story was created by Emil Hamilton.
Synopsis:
While driving Cat Grant and her son to New York, Jimmy Olsen's car breaks down. They are then captured by a group of extremist militia group headed by Colonel Morrison. Jimmy calls Superman with his signal watch. A prototype Superman robot responds to the call, but is damaged while fighting the militia.
The Superman robot makes its way back to Metropolis. The robot thinks it is the real Superman even though its arm is broken off, exposing the metal framework. Bill Henderson contacts Lois and Perry at the Daily Planet for help.
Clark Kent learns that Superman is in the hospital, so he investigates. He pretends not to know who the robot is and allows it to bring him and Lois back to the compound where Jimmy and Cat are being held. A rescue is staged with Lois capturing many of the enemy soldiers. The Superman robot is destroyed.
Afterward, Superman explains that he created the robot to respond to Jimmy's signal in case he was otherwise occupied. However, since the robot failed, Superman decides not to pursue constructing another.
