This story occurs between June 7th and August 7th, while Bruce Wayne is 25 years old.

This story is continued from Batman #405 and continues in Batman #407.

Synopsis:
The police have Batman cornered in an abandoned tenement. They fire bomb the building, forcing Batman to take cover in the basement. With limited weapons, Batman must then fight off members of the Gotham City SWAT team led by Branden. He manages to escape by summoning a swarm of bats using an ultra-sonic signal.

Jim Gordon continues his efforts to uncover the Batman's identity. He is suspicious of Bruce Wayne, but Bruce provides a manufactured alibi. During the investigation, Gordon becomes close to Detective Sarah Essen, and they begin an affair.

Meanwhile, Selina Kyle who witnessed Batman's escape from police decides to abandon her life as a prostitute. She dons a cat costume and begins her career as Catwoman.
