This story is continued from Detective Comics #604 and continues in Detective Comics #606.
Synopsis:
Batman contacts Looker to find out why she broke Preston Payne out of Arkham Asylum. Looker denies involvement, but she suggests that the fourth Clayface may have impersonated her. Batman then discovers that the first Clayface, Basil Karlo was recently released from prison.
While Batman shares his Clayface conspiracy with Commissioner Gordon, Payne and the female Clayface, disguised as Batman himself, rob an armored car. Lady Clayface is able to copy Looker's powers when copying her form, so she is able to control Payne. Her Batman disguise helps to discredit Batman all at the direction of the original Clayface, Basil Karlo.
When the two Clayfaces strike again at a charity event, the real Batman is waiting for them. He engages them in a fight. While trying to disable Payne, he is surprised from behind.
