Comments:
Although it is simply called a mystery island in this story, the island would eventually come to be known as Dinosaur Island. This is the first appearance of the island.
This story is also the unofficial start of the War That Time Forgot series in which soldiers fought dinosaurs. However, that name is not used in this story.
This story is presumed to take place in the Pacific during World War II, although the specifics are left entirely vague in the story.
Synopsis:
After two patrols go missing on a mysterious island, a third group of marines is sent to investigate. This time, instead of landing on the beach, the six marines of Question Mark Patrol reach the island by parachute. On the way down, they are attacked by a pterodactyl, it manages to destroy most of their equipment. One of the men, Phil, does not survive.
Once the marines reach the group they head inland. They discover enemy fortifications which have been abandoned. They also find a large trench which was opened by an earthquake. From out of the trench emerges a tyrannosaurus. It attacks them. The marines seek cover in an enemy tank. Using the tank, the marines kill the dinosaur, but it destroys the tank. The two marines inside are killed.
The three survivors head back to the beach where they await a submarine. They suspect that the earthquake opened the trench and released the monsters from hibernation. On the beach, the pterodactyl attacks again from above. They kill it using an abandoned anti-aircraft gun, but they lose yet another man.
The two remaining men swim out to meet the submarine. It is then attacked by an aquatic dinosaur. The marine use a floating mine to kill it. They then escape the island.
