Wealthy radio station owner Dan Jeffers learns that his old friend Tote Todd is fatally ill. Jeffers decides to grant his friend's greatest wish, to relive the days of the gold rush. Jeffers rebuilds a ghost town and populates it with actors. Tote is brought to town as the sheriff. He doesn't know the town is a charade.
Real crooks decide to cash-in on the gold town. They steal real gold and escape. Vigilante tries to track them down, while Stuff stays close to Tote. As sheriff, Tote thinks it is his job to bring in the crooks, so he goes after them. Tote is shot, and the crooks kidnap Stuff.
Vigilante rescues his partner, but both are held at gunpoint by one of the crooks. Though fatally wounded, Tote makes a last effort and shoots the gunman. Vigilante and Stuff bring Tote back to town where he dies. Tote got his wish to relive old times and die with his boots on.
