Synopsis:
Van-L, an ancestor of Superman, celebrates his Day of Passage, when he will officially be recognized as a man. His girl friend Vara is injured when her flying vehicle crashes. Van-L rushes her to the hospital where robot doctors repair her using cloned body parts. While waiting for her to recover, Van-L meets Kan-Z, an arrogant youth. Kan-Z receives some shocking news from the doctors and exits in a rush.
Van-L then returns home. His mother shares news that riots have broken out in Kandor over the issue of clone rights. Ran-L, Van's father, left Kandor shortly before the riots began. At Van-L's party he argues against clone rights with several guests.
The party is interrupted by Nyra, Kan-Z's mother who announces her son's impending marriage to Kyla of the house Enn-R. Kan-Z then burst into the room, angrily. He shoots his mother in the head, then tries to kill himself. The other guests stop him. Ran-L investigates and learns that one of Nyra's clones was revived. The clone was allowed to develop a mind of its own against Kryptonian law. The clone was Kyla, Kan-Z's fiancee who was also found dead at Kan-Z's hand. Ran-L worries that the incident will provoke a war over cloning.
