Synopsis:
Young Jor-El interrupts an experiment conducted by his uncle Zim-El. As a result Zim-El drops some chemicals that he had been using. Jor-El wants to know what it's like to be an inventor so Zim-El tells him the story of Kil-Gor, Krypton's first inventor.
When Krypton was a young world, villages began to form near the sea. One villager named Kil-Gor was a tinkerer and repairman. However, he enjoyed working on inventions, though no one else found them practical. However, when he uses volcanic glass to create a looking glass, the device helps divers to spot flocks of sea birds sooner, thus allowing them to harvest silten during low tide.
The success of the invention leads to the birds leaving the area, since the Kryptonian are able to harvest their food source. Without the birds, the villagers have no way to know when the tides will recede. Kil-Gor then develops a rudimentary hourglass to measure time. Using the device he is able to predict the tides. With the new inventions helping the harvest of silten, Kil-Gor's village becomes a wealthy marketplace.
