Synopsis:
Nabu's training of the new Doctor Fate is interrupted when lawyer Jack Small arrives at their apartment door. Linda had asked Jack for some legal advice. After Jack is introduced the Lords of Order make a surprise appearance. They want Doctor Fate to step aside and for the current universe to end in order to bring about a new golden age sooner. Nabu and Eric both object.
The Lords of Order then present a challenge for Doctor Fate. They transform Jack in Champion, an axe-wielding fighter attached to a winged horse. They expect the Champion and Doctor Fate to fight. Instead, Doctor Fate refuses to engage. He claims it will accomplish nothing. The Lords of Order then disappear, leaving Jack in his transformed state.
Elsewhere Andrew Bennett visits a temple full of vampire monks seeking his own death. Andrew joins the monks for sunrise outside the temple. The monks and Andrew are all incinerated. However, Andrew reforms a short time later. He still wants to die. The wish is heard by the Lords of Order who offer to help.
