Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite Part One

This story continues in Adventures of Superman #472.

Synopsis:
While visiting the grave of Jerry White, Lex Luthor is struck by a chunk of Red Kryptonite. The rock begins speaking, revealing itself to have been sent by Mxyzptlk who offers Luthor a chance to make him Superman's equal. Despite his mistrust of the imp, Luthor eventually accepts Mxyzptlk's offer.

Elsewhere, Superman engages Barrage, who has escaped prison and is now terrorizing downtown Metropolis. Superman easily bests his opponent, then flies him back to Stryker's Island. Over the water, the effect of the Red Kryptonite robs the Man of Steel of his powers. He falls into the water. Mxyzptlk's magic then transports him to Luthor's office. Lex engages Superman in a fist fight and wins. He then has Superman thrown out on the street.

Superman hails a cab, changes to Clark, and returns to his apartment. Lois is waiting for him. She confides in Clark her feelings after learning that her mother is dying.
