Comments:
This story takes place April 18, 1942.

The Unknown Soldier is not depicted with his distinctive bandages in this story.

The unnamed sergeant who appears to be friends with the Unknown Soldier can't be the same man who would later be shown to be Chat Noir. This story takes place in 1942, but Star Spangled War Stories #155 establishes that the two did not meet until 1944, just prior to D-Day. Therefore this must be a different sergeant.

Synopsis:
A mysterious soldier who possesses intimate knowledge of military history and strategy is brought to the Pentagon to accept an assignment. The Unknown Soldier is also a master of disguise. His true face is known only to his friend, a sergeant in the army. For this assignment, he assumes the identity of Captain Shales, an army air force pilot. He is then sent from Washington to the Pacific.

Captain Shales leads a bomber mission against the major cities of Japan. This is the first attack on Japan's mainland during World War II and follows a string of American defeats in the Philippines. The bombers make their raids, then crash land in Chinese territory. Shales and two of his crew walk away from the crash site and meet up with a group of Chinese guerrillas who conduct them to safety.

Following the mission, the Unknown Soldier returns to Washington and pays his respects at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
