Synopsis:
Winslow Air Force Base is being closed. One of the items held securely on the base is Silver Shield, the artifact which was used to create Captain Atom. General Eiling supervises the move for Silver Shield to a secure facility in the Rockies. However, the artifact begins glowing as transport begins.

Elsewhere, Cameron Scott receives a phone call from his son Randy who is being relocated from his post at the South Yemen embassy. Their call is interrupted by Major Force, who attacks Scott. Scott, who was already feeling ill, transforms into Captain Atom. His illness is magnified. Major Force breaks off the attack when he realizes they are both sick. The condition worsens. Major Force transforms into solid rock. Captain Atom is forced to revert back to Cameron Scott or risk the same fate.

Although Eiling and Megala know that the condition of Captain Atom and Major Force is related to the artifact, they refuse to share this knowledge. Scott is unable to become Captain Atom due to increased pain. Eiling then informs him that Randy is now a hostage as the embassy was invaded by terrorists.

Cameron Scott, Eiling, Allard, and Babylon then stage a mission to rescue the hostages. They successfully take back the embassy. One of the terrorists shoots at Randy. Scott becomes Captain Atom for a moment to stop the bullet. However, the attempt to transforms seems to have caused him to become Cameron Scott permanently. He can no longer become Captain Atom.
