Comments:
This story is the first published appearance of Sir Butch and Archimago. However, the fourth story of Adventure Comics #132 serves as an introduction to both characters. The stories were therefore published out of sequence.
The Shining Knight and Sir Butch are magically transported back in time to the age of Camelot in this story.
Synopsis:
The Shining Knight and Sir Butch are transported back in time again to the days of Camelot by Merlin, the court wizard of King Arthur. Merlin reports that Excalibur has been stolen by the evil Archimago. The villain has placed the sword in a stone and challenged Arthur to remove it.
Arthur meets the challenge, but when he nears to stone, he suddenly grows weak. Archimago then tries to draw the sword. If he succeeds, he will be crowned the new king. Sir Justin thwarts the villain's plan by exposing men hidden in a tunnel beneath the rock chipping away at it from below. With the rock weakened, Archimago could have easily drawn the sword. With the trick exposed, the contest is delayed until the following day.
The next morning, Justin and Butch construct a fake dragon that breathes real fire. After Archimago tries and fails to draw the sword fairly, the dragon is turned loose breathing its fire on the rock. Next Arthur takes his turn and succeeds in drawing the sword. Archimago tries to murder Arthur, but instead he is recaptured.
Later, the Shining Knight explains that the rock was magnetic lodestone. The magnetic properties acted on Arthur's armor, making him weak during his first attempt. The heat from the dragon's fire acted to disrupt the magnetic force of the rock, which allowed Arthur's second attempt to succeed. The Shining Knight and Butch agree to remain in Camelot and continue their adventures.
