When Superboy attempts to stop a robbery, the crooks grab Tommy Tuttle and use him as a hostage. Superboy manages to rescue Tommy and apprehend the crooks, but he fails to learn who they are working for. Other members of the gang grab Tommy again later, prompting Superboy to perform another rescue.

The next day, Tommy brags to his classmates that he helped Superboy stop the crooks. Clark Kent hears the tall tale, which Tommy has changed to make himself sound like a hero. However, the tale does make Clark suspect that the librarian, Mr. Oates, is the gang leader.

Superboy apprehends Oates after proving that the librarian was delivering orders to his men using library books. Tommy had checked out a book containing some orders, prompting the gang to snatch him. After Oates is caught, Superboy recommends that Tommy be given an award for his help.
