Part 2: "The Civil War of the Legion"
The cover of this issue mistakenly depicts Lightning Lad with two human arms and Light Lass with the incorrect costume insignia.
Synopsis:
During an archaeological dig, the Legion discovers a tablet inscribed in Kryptonese, commemorating an ancient war between Krypton and Earth. Deciding to investigate, half of the team time-travels back to ancient Krypton and the other half to ancient Earth.
On Krypton, Legionnaires Superboy, Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad, Colossal Boy, and Element Lad find a band of Kryptonians, lead by Zat-El, who are hiding in the Jewel Mountains after their government has outlawed science. As they have determined to leave Krypton and find a new home world on which to continue their research, the Legionnaires assist them in building a space ark to take them, as well as their giant tame lizards, to Earth. When they arrive they find that Earth's young sun is red, and thus the Kryptonians have no super-powers.
Meanwhile, the other Legionnaires, Brainiac 5, Star Boy, Light Lass, Phantom Girl, and Chameleon Boy, meet a young girl, Leta Lal, who tells them that her people of the star Vruun have colonized Earth and are now building a mighty city called Atlantis. When the two Legion teams meet, an argument arises as to which colony should be allowed to stay, and the Legionnaires are thus split in opposing groups.
The Atlanteans and the Kryptonians prepare for war, each side using weaponry designed only to stun their opponents. In the wake of a furious battle, the retreating Kryptonians find that several of their people have been killed by the Atlanteans, and plot to destroy Atlantis in revenge. Superboy, who is attracted to Leta Lal, is sent to warn her and her people.
Brainiac 5, meanwhile, discovers that xenon in Earth's atmosphere is poisonous to the Atlanteans, and suggests that artificial evolution, making them water-dwelling mermen, would allow them to survive. This is accomplished, and the Kryptonians, learning that the Atlantean weaponry was deadly only to their alien physiology, make peace.
Now reunited, the Legion returns to its own era. Superboy bids farewell to Leta Lal, and returns to the 20th century to learn that the Kryptonian colony was attacked by its great lizards, and perished soon afterward.
