Comments:
This story involves events surrounding an amendment to the Kansas constitution which would have granted women's suffrage. The amendment was defeated when it failed to get the required support from voters. No date for these events is given in this story, but in the real world, a similar amendment was defeated in 1867.
Synopsis:
Jonah Hex rides into town of Meadow Springs Kansas to collect the bounty on an outlaw. The town is the focal point of a women's suffrage movement led by Mary Ellen Todd. Miss Todd hires Hex to protect her group from a gang of hooded troublemakers led by Curtis Thraxton, a landowner who seeks to stop her cause from succeeding. Although he doesn't agree with Todd's ideals, Hex takes the job.
Thraxton's men capture Hex and try to get him to switch side. Hex's reveals that he did that once before, but he refuses to do it again. Thraxton then orders Hex killed. Jonah turns the tables on his two would-be killers. He then finishes his job of protecting Todd until the amendment to the Kansas constitution is voted upon. The vote fails to gather the necessary support.
As Hex prepares to leave town, Thraxton and his men confront him for the loss of the two men. Hex shoots them. Thraxton is only wounded, and it is Todd who finishes him off. She then claims to have saved Hex's life and makes him wear an armband to carry on support for her cause.
