Comments:
This story contains flashbacks to 1861 and 1863. It is said to take place in Texas in 1875. Given other events later in the Jonah Hex timeline including his trip to the future in 1875. This story most likely takes place several years earlier.

Jonah's part in the Civil War is revealed in this story.

Synopsis:
Jonah Hex is confronted by a teenager who calls him a traitor. The boy also blames Hex for the death of his father. When the boy fires a shot, it startles Hex's horse. Jonah is kicked in the face, then taken to a doctor's office.

While Jonah's injury is being treated, he thinks back to his days as a lieutenant for the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War. After Jonah heard Abe Lincoln deliver the Emancipation Proclamation, Jonah felt he could no longer fight for an army in support of slavery. He also did not want to run or turn traitor, so he surrendered himself to a Union captain at Fort Charlotte.

The captain learned from the mud on Hex's horse's hooves where the other Rebel soldiers were hiding. He ordered them rounded up, including Jonah's best friend Jeb Turnbull. The captain then made it seem that Jonah betrayed the men. After finding an escape route, Jonah tried to get Jeb and the other soldiers out of the fort. However, the Union captain knew about the escape, and used it as an excuse to kill most of his prisoners. The few who survived and escaped, blamed Jonah Hex.

Jonah himself did escape from the Fort. However, his best friend Jeb did not. Turnbull's death earned Jonah the enmity of Jeb's father, a wealthy plantation owner who carried an eagle-topped cane.

Back in the present, Jonah makes a full recovery from his horse-related injury. He then has a showdown with the teenager. Jonah allows the boy to think he is dead, quenching the boy's thirst for vengeance.
