History:
Rex Mason was a war hero, soldier of fortune, and adventurer world-famous for his exploits. Most of his high -risk jobs were financed by Simon Stagg, one of the world's richest men, who was pleased with Mason's performance but became wary when Mason began romancing his daughter, Sapphire. Stagg had no intention of letting Sapphire marry an unrefined adventurer like Mason, but he couldn't bring himself to hurt her by forbidding them to see one another. Consequently, Stagg opted to "dispose" of Mason by sending him on one final mission — to raid the lost pyramid of Ahk-Ton and obtain the priceless Orb of Ra.
Mason, accompanied by Java (a million-war-old caveman resurrected by Stagg's scientists, who developed a crush on Sapphire), found the pyramid. Inside, they unearthed the Orb — and, following Stagg's orders, Java overpowered Mason and took the artifact, leaving Rex to die inside the pyramid. Mason's fallen body activated an ancient system of pulleys and counter-weights, and was carried into a chamber containing the meteor from which the Orb was carved. There, the meteor's radiation transformed Mason's body into a freakish, multicolored form.
Upon awakening, Mason discovered that the now possessed the power to alter his body (or any part thereof) into any element or compound found in the human body. Turning himself into a gaseous form, Mason escaped the pyramid and later returned to Stagg's estate. With the encouragement of Sapphire — whose love for Mason was unshaken by his transformation — he decided to use his newfound abilities to fight evil as Metamorpho the Element Man.
Over the years, Mason continued to work for Stagg. Stagg spent his free time and energy pretending to find a cure for Mason; Rex was later to learn that Stagg never had any intention of allowing such an important and powerful discovery as Metamorpho to escape from his control.
During the early part of his career, Metamorpho encountered a number of other heroes. Still, he longed for his lost humanity and, having heard about Dr. Helga Jace, a scientist who specialized in meta-human experiments, traveled to Markovia to enlist her aid. While there, Metamorpho joined Batman and several other heroes, all of whom had joined forces to put an end to the Markovian revolution. Discovering how well they worked as a team, the heroes — including Metamorpho — banded together as the Outsiders.
Metamorpho continued to see Sapphire; the two of them were married and were expecting a child when Dr. Jace announced a cure for Mason. But she had no cure. As the other Outsiders soon learned, Jace was an agent of the evil alien race known as the Manhunters. Jace corrupted Metamorpho, brainwashing him into serving her ends. In the ensuing battle with the Outsiders, an explosion reduced Jace and her new ally to ashes.
Metamorpho was thought dead; however, the Dominators, during their invasion of Earth, triggered a "gene-bomb" that effected metabolic changes in all Earth's super-humans — including Metamorpho, who returned to life. During his "death," Sapphire married Java under pressure from her father; moreover, she had given birth to Metamorpho's son, a mutagenically altered boy who has transmutation powers similar to his father's. The boy remains in the custody of Sapphire and Simon Stagg, who are genetically immune to the boy's touch and are the only humans who can safety care for him.
Metamorpho has learned to deal with his inhumanity in a self-deprecating manner Despite his easy-going demeanor, he has a formidable temper, but he exhibits it only when his friends or loved ones are threatened.
Powers:
Metamorpho can transform himself into any combination of chemical elements and can shape those elements into virtually any form. He has tremendous strength and is highly resistant to many forms of physical attack.
