"The Many Deaths of the Batman" Chapter One
This story is told almost entirely without dialogue or captions. Only a single word balloon is used.
This story continues in Batman #434.
Synopsis:
Two police officers find the body of Batman in an alley. They rush him to the hospital where doctors try to save his life. Their efforts fails, and Batman dies. His body, still masked, is taken to the morgue where a reporter takes a photograph.
The story appears in the newspaper. In Arkham Asylum, Penguin and Two-Face are upset that they were not personally responsible for their enemy's death. Dick Grayson mourns the loss of his mentor when he sees the headline. Alfred rushes to the Batcave after reading the morning paper. He finds it empty.
When Commissioner Gordon receives the news he enters the morgue to examine the body. He removes the mask, revealing a blond man underneath. He then activates the Bat-Signal.
Across town, a slightly pudgy man in a Batman costume is propped up on the roof of the Gotham Plaza Hotel. The building then explodes.
